About Christina

Christina Romer is the Class of 1957-Garff B. Wilson Professor Emerita of Economics and Professor of the Graduate School in the Department of Economics at the University of California, Berkeley, contributing prominently to Business & Economics. She received her B.A. from the College of William and Mary in 1981 and her Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1985. Romer began her academic career as Assistant Professor of Economics and Public Affairs at Princeton University from 1985 to 1988 before joining UC Berkeley in 1988 as Acting Associate Professor, advancing to Associate Professor in 1990, full Professor in 1993, and the endowed chair position in 1997 until becoming Emerita in 2023. She served as Chair of the White House Council of Economic Advisers from January 2009 to September 2010. Additionally, she is a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research in the Programs in Monetary Economics, Economic Fluctuations and Growth, and the Development of the American Economy, co-director of the Program in Monetary Economics from 2003 to 2008 and 2010 to 2018, and a member of the NBER Business Cycle Dating Committee since 2003, with interruptions during her CEA tenure.

Her research specializations encompass the effects of fiscal policy, identification of monetary shocks, determinants of American macroeconomic policy, changes in short-run fluctuations over the 20th century, and causes of the Great Depression, within the fields of economic history and macroeconomics. Key publications include the co-edited book Reducing Inflation: Motivation and Strategy (University of Chicago Press for NBER, 1997); 'What Ended the Great Depression?' (Journal of Economic History, 1992); 'The Macroeconomic Effects of Tax Changes: Estimates Based on a New Measure of Fiscal Shocks' (American Economic Review, 2010, with David H. Romer); 'New Evidence on the Aftermath of Financial Crises in Advanced Countries' (American Economic Review, 2017, with David H. Romer); and 'Presidential Address: Does Monetary Policy Matter? The Narrative Approach after 35 Years' (American Economic Review, 2023, with David H. Romer). Romer has earned major awards such as American Economic Association Distinguished Fellow (2023), Omicron Delta Epsilon Distinguished Economist Award (2022), Econometric Society Fellow (2021), Guggenheim Fellowship (1998), Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2004), UC Berkeley Distinguished Teaching Award (1994), NSF Presidential Young Investigator Award (1989-1994), and Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship (1989). She has held leadership roles including President of the American Economic Association (2022), Vice President (2006), and Executive Committee member (2001-2004), as well as service on editorial boards for the American Economic Journal: Macroeconomics (2007-2008), Review of Economics and Statistics (1994-2002), and Journal of Economic History (1994-1997).
