About Christine

Christine Borgman is Distinguished Research Professor and Presidential Chair Emerita in Information Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles School of Education and Information Studies. She joined UCLA in 1983 and has held positions including Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, Professor, Distinguished Professor, Department Chair, and University of California Presidential Chair in Information Studies. Her research centers on scientific data practices, information policy, knowledge infrastructures, and open science. She earned a PhD in Communication from Stanford University, an MLIS from the University of Pittsburgh, and a BA in Mathematics from Michigan State University. Borgman has authored more than 300 publications in fields such as information studies, computer science, communication, and law, including three award-winning books from MIT Press: Big Data, Little Data, No Data: Scholarship in the Networked World (2015), which won the American Publishers Award for Professional and Scholarly Excellence (PROSE Award) in Computing and Information Sciences; Scholarship in the Digital Age: Information, Infrastructure, and the Internet (2007); and From Gutenberg to the Global Information Infrastructure: Access to Information in a Networked World (2000), both named Best Information Science Book of the Year by the Association for Information Science and Technology.

Borgman has received numerous honors, including election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, fellowship in the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Association for Computing Machinery, the Paul Evan Peters Award from the Coalition for Networked Information, Association for Research Libraries, and EDUCAUSE, the Award of Merit and Research in Information Science Award from the Association for Information Science and Technology, Legacy Laureate of the University of Pittsburgh, and nomination for membership in Sigma Xi. She serves on the Library of Congress Scholars Council, the Board of Directors of the Electronic Privacy Information Center, and the CLARIAH International Advisory Panel, and has previously contributed to the U.S. National Academies’ Board on Research Data and Information, U.S. National CODATA, and the Council of the Interuniversity Consortium for Political and Social Research. Borgman holds editorial board positions with Harvard Data Science Review, PLOS One, Journal of Data and Information Science, International Journal of Digital Curation, and Policy and Internet. She has been a visiting scholar at institutions including Harvard University, University of Oxford, and Lund University.
