About Christoph

Dipl.-Ing. Dr. Christoph Topf serves as Privatdozent (Priv.-Doz.), Assistant Head of the Institute of Catalysis (INCA), and Interim Head of the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry at Johannes Kepler University Linz (JKU). He earned his Dipl.-Ing. degree in Technical Chemistry from JKU in 2009. In December 2023, Vice-Rector Alberta Bonanni presented him with his Venia Legendi certificate for his habilitation thesis titled "New Strategies for Base-Metal-Catalyzed and Benign Hydrogenation Catalysts." Together with Prof. Marko Hapke, Topf co-leads INCA, where he has contributed to catalysis research since 2009, including early projects on the synthesis and characterization of gold(I) and gold(III) complexes with N-functionalized N-heterocyclic carbenes. His career at JKU encompasses roles in the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry, advancing from doctoral research to principal investigator status on multiple funded projects.

Topf's research specializes in sustainable catalysis, developing earth-abundant base-metal (manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, copper, molybdenum) homogeneous and heterogeneous systems for hydrogenation reactions. Key areas include selective reductions of nitriles to primary amines, ketones, aldehydes, quinolines, nitroarenes, enoates, alkynes, carboxylic acids, and biomass valorization. He has co-authored over 40 peer-reviewed publications in leading journals, including "Selective Catalytic Hydrogenations of Nitriles, Ketones and Aldehydes by Well-Defined Manganese Pincer Complexes" (J. Am. Chem. Soc., 2016), "Stable and Inert Cobalt Hydrogenation of C≡N and C=O Bonds" (J. Am. Chem. Soc., 2016), "Direct Ruthenium-Catalyzed Hydrogenation of Carboxylic Acids to Alcohols" (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., 2015), "A Robust, Versatile, and Reusable Heterogeneous Hydrogenation Catalyst Based on a Simple Ni(II) Diimine Complex" (Tetrahedron Green Chem., 2024), and "(Semi)Hydrogenation of Enoates and Alkynes Effected by a Versatile, Particulate Copper Catalyst" (Tetrahedron Chem., 2024). As principal investigator, he directs projects such as "Molybdenum-Based Hydrogenation Catalysts" (2026–2029) and "H2MAN - Manganese Catalysts for (Enantioselective) Redox Transformations" (2020–2022). Topf has delivered conference presentations, including on heterogeneous hydrogenation of quinolines (2024), and organizes for the GÖCH Ortsverband Linz. His research has amassed over 2,800 citations, impacting green chemistry advancements.
