Christopher Furner is a Professor in the Department of Management Information Systems in the College of Business at East Carolina University. He received his Ph.D. in Management Information Systems from Florida State University in 2008. His research interests center on consumer behavior in e-commerce, virtual work, and mobile computing, encompassing topics such as location-based privacy, mobile application stickiness, adoption dynamics, cultural determinants of information systems outcomes, knowledge management system effectiveness, media choice, and purchase intention in online environments. Furner has made significant contributions to understanding how individuals interact with technology in business contexts, examining factors like technostress, trust, and efficacy in digital adoption, particularly in areas like telemedicine and electronic word-of-mouth communication.
With 41 peer-reviewed journal articles authored as of 2025, Furner's publications appear in leading venues including Information Systems Journal, IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication, AIS Transactions on Human-Computer Interaction, Computers in Human Behavior, Journal of Internet Commerce, Electronic Markets, The Marketing Review, Journal of Consumer Marketing, International Journal of Information Systems and Social Change, and Journal of Information Technology Management. Key works include "Barriers to intention to adopt telemedicine: The interplay between technostress and trust" (2024, Journal of Health Care Chaplaincy), "Gossip: a channel for the development of personal reputation" (2017, International Journal of Organizational Analysis), and "Media Selection and the Imposter Phenomenon: A Multinational Investigation" (2014). Furner developed a graduate certificate program in Business Analytics and served as Vice Chair of the Graduate Council, contributing to university governance and program innovation in management information systems.
