He holds a Bachelor of Economics (Honours) and a PhD from the University of Sydney, with his doctorate awarded in 1991 based on research into the history of Australian employers. Throughout his career at the University of Sydney, Wright has advanced from positions in the Department of Industrial Relations to his current professorship. He leads the Balanced Enterprise Research Network (BERN) and serves as a key researcher in the Sydney Environment Institute, focusing on sustainable business and environmental issues.
Wright's research specializations encompass the diffusion of management knowledge, identity, emotion, and justification in organisational life, the influence of management consultants on innovation and change, and the political economy of business responses to climate change. His prolific scholarship includes highly influential books such as Climate Change, Capitalism and Corporations: Processes of Creative Self-Destruction (Cambridge University Press, 2015, co-authored with Daniel Nyberg) and Organising Responses to Climate Change: The Politics of Mitigation, Adaptation and Suffering (Cambridge University Press, 2022). Prominent journal articles feature "An Inconvenient Truth: How Organizations Translate Climate Change into Business as Usual" (Academy of Management Review, 2017, 1004 citations), "Hippies on the Third Floor: Climate Change, Narrative Identity and the Micro-Politics of Corporate Environmentalism" (Organization Studies, 2012, 407 citations), "Reinventing Human Resource Management: Business Partners, Internal Consultants and the Limits to Professionalization" (Human Relations, 2008, 336 citations), "Management Innovation Through Standardization: Consultants as Standardizers of Organizational Practice" (Research Policy, 2012, 315 citations), and "Climate-Proofing Management Research" (Academy of Management Perspectives, 2022, 189 citations).
