About Cindy

Cindy H. White is an Associate Professor and the current Department Chair in the Department of Communication within the College of Media, Communication and Information at the University of Colorado Boulder. She earned her Ph.D. in 1996 from the University of Arizona, M.A. in 1989 and B.A. in 1987 from Texas Tech University. Dr. White's area of specialization is interpersonal communication. Her academic interests encompass personal relationships, nonverbal behavior, communication learning, relational communication, and health communication. Her research explores how patterns of interaction form the foundation for personal relationships, relational transitions impacting family communication, young adults’ communication with parents about money and purchasing, and how people learn about communication via family socialization and programs designed to shape communication practices.

In addition to her research, White has published extensively. She is co-editor of the book Together Alone: Personal Relationships in Public Places (University of California Press, 2005). Key journal articles include "Testing interpersonal deception theory: Effects of suspicion on communication behaviors and perceptions" (Communication Theory, 1996), "The role of conversational involvement in deceptive interpersonal interactions" (Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, 1999), "Adaptation and communicative design - Patterns of interaction in truthful and deceptive conversations" (Human Communication Research, 2001), "Deception in computer-mediated communication" (Group Decision and Negotiation, 2004), "Welsh widows’ descriptions of their relationships: Themes of relational experience in long‐term marriage" (Communication Studies, 2004), "The impact of a health campaign on hand hygiene and upper respiratory illness among college students living in residence halls" (Journal of American College Health, 2005), and "Communicative challenges of bystander intervention: Impact of goals and message design logic on strategies college students use to intervene in drinking situations" (Health Communication, 2014). White has also served as Associate Dean for Undergraduate Curriculum and Programs, co-chair of the Provost's Faculty Communication Committee, and member of the Center for Teaching & Learning Advisory Board.
