Claus Roehrborn, M.D., serves as Professor and Chair of the Department of Urology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, holding the E.E. Fogelson and Greer Garson Fogelson Distinguished Chair in Urology and the S.T. Harris Family Chair in Medical Science, in Honor of John D. McConnell, M.D. He earned his M.D. from Justus-Liebig-University Giessen in 1980, completed an internship and residency in urological surgery at the German Army Hospital from 1981 to 1986, and further residency and fellowship in urological surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center from 1989 to 1991. He joined UT Southwestern in 1984 for advanced training in urologic endocrinology, became faculty in 1992, and has chaired the department since 2002. With over 30 years of practice, Roehrborn focuses on prostate cancer evaluation via PSA screening and robotic prostatectomy, having performed more than 3,000 da Vinci procedures, and benign prostatic hyperplasia treatment using minimally invasive options including Urolift, Aquablation, laser prostatectomy, and TURP. Under his leadership, the Department of Urology ranks among the nation's best per U.S. News & World Report.
His research specializations include benign prostatic hyperplasia, lower urinary tract symptoms in men, prostate cancer, tumor markers, outcomes research, and urological ultrasound. Roehrborn has contributed to American Urological Association guidelines on LUTS/BPH assessment and treatment since 1994 and produced key publications such as "WATER versus WATER II 5-year update: Comparing Aquablation therapy for benign prostatic hyperplasia in 30-80-cm³ and 80-150-cm³ prostates" (2024), "Bladder Outlet Obstruction Relief and Symptom Improvement Following Medical and Surgical Therapies for Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms Suggestive of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia" (2024), "Three-year outcomes after Aquablation therapy compared to TURP" (2020), "Surgical Management of Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms Attributed to Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia: AUA Guideline" (2018), and "Rezūm Water Vapor Thermal Therapy for Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms Associated With Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia: 4-Year Results" (2019). Awards include the Eugene Fuller Triennial Prostate Award (2022), Patricia and William L. Watson, Jr., M.D. Award for Excellence in Clinical Medicine (2010), D Magazine Best Doctor (2010–2022), and Texas Super Doctor (2004–2020). He initiated UT Southwestern's robotic surgery program in 2006 and has lectured as invited visiting professor in over 30 countries.
