Clive Gray is Professor of Immunology at Stellenbosch University in the Division of Immunology, Biomedical Research Institute, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. He holds a BSc (Hons), MSc (Med) and PhD (Med). Gray previously served at the University of Cape Town, where he was Chair of the Division of Immunology and is now Emeritus Professor of Immunology. He leads the Reproductive Immunology Research Consortium in Africa (RIRCA) at Stellenbosch University.
Gray’s research centres on human immunology with a focus on HIV and reproductive immunology, examining inflammatory mechanisms in placentae from mothers infected with HIV and CMV that contribute to pre-term birth and adverse birth outcomes. He leads the NIH-funded TIGRIS consortium on immunity in the first 1000 days in mother-infant dyads. Gray has published over 140 papers and received the 2024 Harry Oppenheimer Fellowship Award. He serves as Chair of the Education Committee of the International Union of Immunological Societies, President of the Federation of African Immunological Societies, and Director of the Immunopaedia Foundation, which operates the Immunopaedia online immunology education platform.
