Dr. Cody Mullen is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Public Health at Purdue University’s College of Health and Human Sciences, where he serves as Director of the Master of Health Administration program. He earned a PhD in Health Policy and Management with a minor in Epidemiology from Indiana University-Indianapolis in 2019 and a BS in Interdisciplinary Science, emphasizing Statistics and Healthcare, from Purdue University-West Lafayette in 2012. Prior to joining Purdue in 2021, Mullen served as Policy, Research, and Development Officer at the Indiana Rural Health Association from 2017 to 2021, directing projects on infant mortality, chronic disease management, and telehealth. He also held adjunct faculty positions at Indiana University-Indianapolis from 2018 to 2021 and Ivy Tech Community College-Lafayette from 2012 to 2020.
Mullen’s academic interests center on health services research, rural health, health disparities, healthcare delivery, and disability health. He applies scientific and engineering principles to analyze trends, patient outcomes, and care coordination in acute care, outpatient, rural, urban, and resource-constrained settings, with a focus on vulnerable populations including those with disabilities and in health provider shortage areas. Over ten years of experience includes research on hospital readmissions and assistive technology utilization. Key publications include “Implementation facilitators and barriers for primary care providers prescribing daily oral PrEP to adolescents in the United States” (2023, AIDS Patient Care and STDs), “Work-life balance among health administration faculty who are parents” (2016, Journal of Health Administration Education), and “A literature review of preventable hospital readmissions: Preceding the Readmissions Reduction Act” (2016, IIE Transactions on Healthcare Systems Engineering). Awards encompass the Hulman Early Careerist Award (Indiana Public Health Association, 2018), Delta Omega Membership (2018), and National Rural Health Association Fellowship (2014). He serves as Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute ambassador, co-chair of the Rural Health committee (American Public Health Association Medical Care Section), section chair-elect (APHA Medical Care Section), member of the NRHA Board of Trustees, chair of the NRHA Public Health Constituency Group, and President of the Arc of Indiana Board of Directors.
