Colin M. Gray is an Associate Professor of Informatics in the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering at Indiana University Bloomington, serving as HCI/d Program Director since 2023. He earned a PhD in Instructional Systems Technology from Indiana University Bloomington in 2014 with a minor in Informatics and Human-Computer Interaction Design, MEd in Educational Technology from the University of South Carolina in 2010, MA in Graphic Design from Savannah College of Art and Design in 2008, and BS in Graphic Design from Bob Jones University in 2005. His career includes positions as Associate Professor at Purdue University from 2021 to 2023 and Assistant Professor there from 2015 to 2021 in the Department of Computer Graphics Technology, Postdoctoral Research Associate at Iowa State University from 2014 to 2015, and earlier research and graduate assistant roles at Indiana University. Gray maintains a design practice as Principal of graydesign since 1998.
Gray's research in human-computer interaction, design, and education centers on dark patterns, ethics and values in design, UX competence, design methods, and HCI pedagogy, directing the UXP2 Lab with National Science Foundation support. His work has garnered coverage in The Atlantic, Bloomberg, and Wired. Key publications include books 'Universal Methods of Ethical Design' (2025, co-authored with S.S. Chivukula) and 'Studio Properties: A Field Guide to Design Education' (2025, co-edited), edited volumes 'Historical Instructional Design Cases' (2021) and 'Studio Teaching in Higher Education' (2016), and highly cited papers such as 'The dark (patterns) side of UX design' (CHI 2018, 1421 citations) and 'Dark Patterns and the Legal Requirements of Consent Banners' (CHI 2021). Gray has received the CNIL-Inria Privacy Award (2025), Best of CHI (2026), Best Paper Award at DIS (2023), Trustees Teaching Award from Indiana University (2025), and multiple Best of CHI Honorable Mentions. He serves as Associate Editor for Designing and ACM Journal on Responsible Computing, and chairs the ACM SIGCHI Education Committee.
