Damian Marucci serves as Clinical Associate Professor in the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney, within the Children's Hospital Westmead Clinical School. He earned degrees in Medicine (MBBS), Surgery, Arts (BA), and a PhD in Surgery from the University of Sydney, graduating with his undergraduate degrees in 1994. Marucci completed accredited general surgery training followed by specialist plastic surgery training in Sydney. He pursued advanced fellowships including Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Oxford Plastic Surgery Unit in England, Craniofacial Surgery at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London, and the Mentor International Aesthetic Surgery Fellowship with Mr. Barry Jones in London. Returning to Sydney in late 2007, he has practiced alongside Associate Professor Darrell Perkins and holds appointments at St George Hospital, St George Private Hospital, Aesthetic Day Surgery (as Director), and the Children’s Hospital at Westmead.
As a registered specialist Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon (AHPRA MED0001167269) with over 15 years of experience, Marucci specializes in paediatric craniofacial surgery, facial plastic surgery, reconstructive microsurgery, facial trauma, skin cancer management, breast reconstruction post-cancer, and lower limb reconstruction, alongside cosmetic procedures such as breast augmentation, reduction, abdominoplasty, rhinoplasty, and facelifts. His research contributions include over 40 peer-reviewed journal publications, book chapters, and invited commentaries. He supervises Masters and medical students, teaches advanced surgical anatomy in the University of Sydney's Masters of Surgery program, and convenes the monthly Plastic Surgery Journal Club. Marucci has received prestigious awards including the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Surgeon Scientist Scholarship, Young Investigator Award from the Surgical Research Society of Australasia, Noel Newton Medal from RACS, Excellence in Teaching Award from the University of Sydney, multiple Best Paper and Best Presentation awards at conferences, and the Hugh Johnston travel grant from RACS. He serves on the Editorial Board of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Global Open, hosts the PRS Global Open Keynotes podcast on platforms like Apple Podcasts and Spotify, and has developed and patented minimally invasive surgical instruments to reduce tissue trauma. Marucci is actively involved in professional societies, serving on the Education Committee of the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons (previously Secretary for NSW Chapter), the Board of the Australian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, and is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Australian New Zealand Society of Cranio Maxillo Facial Surgery, and Australian Medical Association. He volunteers annually on surgical missions, including cleft lip and palate repairs in Samoa with Interplast since 2011 and work in war-torn countries with Médecins Sans Frontières.
