About Dani

Dr Dani Barrington is a Senior Lecturer in Global Health (Teaching and Research) within the School of Population and Global Health at the University of Western Australia. Holding a PhD in Environmental Systems Engineering from the University of Western Australia (2012), a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Environmental Engineering, and a Bachelor of Science, she began her career as a public health engineer working for a non-government organisation in Nepal. Following her doctoral studies, she served as a Research Fellow jointly appointed by Monash University and the International WaterCentre, and later as a Research Fellow in Water Engineering for Developing Countries at Cranfield University. She also held an Honorary Research Fellow position and was a Visiting Lecturer in Water, Sanitation, and Health at the University of Leeds School of Civil Engineering. Her research focuses on water, sanitation, and hygiene (WaSH) in low-resource contexts, menstrual health and stigma, participatory methods bridging engineering, health, and well-being, and learning from failures in environmental and public health interventions. Barrington employs interactive approaches to explore socio-technical aspects of sanitation and menstruation, contributing insights into gender norms, cultural influences, and program sustainability.

Barrington has authored key publications including 'The persistence of failure in water, sanitation and hygiene programs: A systematic review' (BMJ Global Health, 2025), 'Learning from Failure in Environmental and Public Health Research' (Environmental Health Insights, 2022), 'On a journey to citywide inclusive sanitation (CWIS)? A political economy analysis of non-sewered sanitation in Dhaka, Bangladesh' (Global Public Health, 2024), 'An analysis of gender inclusion in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene research' (Development Policy Review, 2023), and 'From “period poverty” to “period parity” to meet menstrual health needs' (The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health, 2021). She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) and was short-listed for Best Supervisor in the Faculty of Engineering at the Leeds Partnership Awards (2019). At UWA, she serves as a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Contact Officer for the School of Population and Global Health. Barrington has participated in public events such as UWA's International Women's Day panel (2026), organised workshops on men supporting daughters with periods (2025), and featured in podcasts like STEAM Powered on public health engineering (2021). Her work informs global discussions on WaSH sustainability, menstrual stigma reduction, and inclusive health policies.
