Daniel N. DeMaio, M.Ed., R.T.(R)(CT), is Professor and Director of the Radiologic Technology Program in the Department of Health Sciences at the University of Hartford's College of Education, Nursing and Health Professions. He holds a B.S. from Long Island University and an M.Ed. from the University of Hartford. An educator in medical imaging for more than 30 years, DeMaio specializes clinically in computed tomography and has lectured nationally on radiation safety issues as well as the physics and instrumentation of CT imaging. His research interests encompass digital radiography, radiation dose and risk management, shielding practices in CT, student engagement in health sciences education, and dissemination of translational research.
DeMaio has authored key publications including the book Mosby's Exam Review for Computed Tomography (third edition, 2017), Registry Review in Computed Tomography (1996), and Best Practices in Digital Radiography (2019). Notable articles feature Flipping the Classroom With Screencasts (2014), CT Radiation Dose and Risk: Fact vs Fiction (2017), Special Report. Shielding in Computed Tomography: An Update (2014), and "I was able to have a voice without being self-conscious": students' perceptions of audience response systems in the health sciences curriculum (2013). In professional service, he was elected President-Elect of the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT), the world's largest radiologic science association, commencing July 1, 2024. Prior ASRT roles include Vice President on the Board of Directors, Vice Speaker of the House (2019-2020), Chairman of the Commission on Education, Chapter Chairman, and Delegate. He previously served two terms as President of the Connecticut Society of Radiologic Technologists and on its board. DeMaio's leadership and scholarship have significantly impacted radiologic technology education, certification preparation, and professional standards.
