Daniel Guttentag, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Hospitality and Tourism Management in the School of Business at the College of Charleston, where he also directs the Office of Tourism Analysis. He received his Ph.D. in Recreation and Leisure Studies from the University of Waterloo in 2016, a Master of Environmental Studies in Tourism Policy and Planning from the University of Waterloo in 2010, and a B.A. in History from Colgate University in 2004. Guttentag joined the College of Charleston in 2017 after teaching at Ryerson University in Toronto. He teaches courses such as Principles and Practices of Hospitality and Tourism, Hospitality and Tourism Technology, and Forecasting and Business Analytics in Hospitality. As Innovator Program Coordinator and Mentor, he has guided students in launching ventures, including alumnus Kolt Robins' Pacifica Aventuras adventure tour company in Nicaragua.
Guttentag's research focuses on peer-to-peer lodging platforms like Airbnb and their disruptive effects, volunteer tourism, market segmentation, casino gambling behavior, virtual reality in tourism, and tourism responses to crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic. His seminal publications include 'Airbnb: Disruptive innovation and the rise of an informal tourism accommodation sector' (2013), 'Why Tourists Choose Airbnb: A Motivation-Based Segmentation Study' (2017), 'Progress on Airbnb: a literature review' (2019), 'Who Should You Market to in a Crisis? Examining Plog’s Model during the COVID-19 Pandemic' (2021), and ''Southern hospitality' in Charleston, South Carolina: The diverse meanings of a regional form of hospitality in a growing tourism destination' (2022). With over 7,500 citations across 58 publications, his work has significantly influenced hospitality and tourism scholarship. In 2023, he was named a Fulbright U.S. Scholar for 2023-24, teaching and researching in Panama. Guttentag has been ranked among the world's top 2% of scientists in sport, leisure, and tourism and frequently provides expert commentary on tourism trends to media outlets including BBC, Associated Press, and USA Today.
