Rate My Professor Danping Wang

Danping Wang is an Associate Professor and Programme Leader of Chinese in the Faculty of Arts and Education at the University of Auckland. She holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts from Renmin University of China, as well as a PhD in Education from the Education University of Hong Kong. In her current role, she also serves as Director of the Centre for Chinese Language and leads initiatives in language education. Wang is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and contributes to subject expert groups for the Ministry of Education in New Zealand.

Her research specializations focus on Chinese language education, translanguaging practices in multilingual classrooms, educational technology, and multilingualism. Key publications include the book Multilingualism and Translanguaging in Chinese Language Classrooms published in 2019, the article Translanguaging in Chinese foreign language classrooms: Students and teachers’ attitudes and practices in the International Journal of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism in 2019, and Towards internationalising the curriculum: A case study of Chinese language teacher education programs in China and Australia in the Australian Journal of Teacher Education in 2013. Additional works address code choice in Chinese as a foreign language classrooms, learning or becoming ideology in textbooks, studying Chinese language in higher education through learners’ eyes, constructing an emergency Chinese curriculum during the pandemic, and integrating translanguaging into assessment. Her scholarship has achieved significant impact with over two thousand citations on Google Scholar. Wang has explored topics such as grit and emotions in language learning, perceptions of Confucius Institutes, and the use of English in Chinese foreign language teaching. She maintains active involvement in advancing Chinese language programmes and integrating innovative approaches in higher education settings.
