David Bulpitt serves as Instructor of Horticulture and Program Coordinator at the Northwest Campus of Tarrant County College, part of the Tarrant County College District Office. Within the Agricultural and Veterinary Science discipline, he heads the Horticulture Department and teaches classes in a broad range of horticulture subjects, from soil science and greenhouse management to plant health diagnostics and landscape practices. His instruction emphasizes practical, hands-on learning through hybrid formats that include in-person labs for activities like plant propagation, pruning, fertilizing, and cultivation. Bulpitt's leadership has overseen significant program growth, with the department doubling in size during his approximately eight years at the college. He prepares students for professional roles in growing plants for landscapes, food production, and wildlife habitats, while addressing physical demands of outdoor work and chemical handling.
Under David Bulpitt's mentorship, Tarrant County College Northwest horticulture students demonstrated exceptional performance by finishing 17th out of 43 colleges and universities in the 2022 National Collegiate Landscape Competition at North Carolina State University, outperforming many larger teams from institutions such as North Carolina State, Mississippi State, Penn State, Kansas State, and Colorado State; by average points per student, the 11-member TCC team ranked 6th nationally. Bulpitt commends his students' dedication, as they sacrificed much of their spring break to prepare and compete, gaining valuable career experience. He coordinates the program's annual spring plant sales, where students sell annually flowers, herbs, vegetables, and ornamentals propagated in campus greenhouses. Additionally, he presented online to the Tarrant County Food Policy Council on horticulture topics. Before moving to Texas in 2014, Bulpitt taught horticulture courses at the New York Botanical Garden for over 18 years, managed a full-service nursery in the New York City metropolitan area, and contributed to prominent projects including Battery Park City Parks and the High Line. His career encompasses over 20 years in the horticulture industry, holding positions as grower, landscape manager, and garden center manager.
