David De Lapeyre served as a lecturer at the Charles Telfair Campus of Curtin University in Mauritius, where he supervised students from Design, Mass Communication, and Law programs in service-learning initiatives aimed at enhancing employability skills and promoting social inclusion. During his appointment from 2014 to 2017, he played a pivotal role in the #NuKapav project, an authentic work-integrated learning experience designed to bridge the skills gap between university graduates and employer expectations in Mauritius. In collaboration with the Global Rainbow Foundation, students under his guidance created campaign artifacts including billboards, videos, brochures, organized advocacy sessions, and executed a social media campaign to raise awareness about the rights and potential of Persons with Disabilities when provided equal opportunities.
De Lapeyre co-authored the 2018 publication 'Project #NuKapav: a Mauritian service-learning case study' with Sarita Hardin-Ramanan and Loga Devi Balla Soupramanien, appearing in Equality, Diversity and Inclusion: An International Journal (Volume 37, Issue 2, pp. 167-181). Employing a focus group methodology with 23 participating students, the paper evaluates the project's impact from professional, civic engagement, and social justice perspectives. Key findings underscore how service-learning equips graduates with essential career skills and instills enduring commitment to community causes, recommending its integration into work-integrated learning programs across Mauritius and regional universities. The study acknowledges limitations in capturing only student viewpoints and suggests incorporating perspectives from employers, employees, and supervisors for a holistic assessment. De Lapeyre also contributed to the editorial team of the CTI Chronicles newsletter.
