About David

David B. Johnson is a tenured full Professor of Computer Science and of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Rice University, where he joined the faculty in 2000 and serves as a member of the Ken Kennedy Institute for Information Technology. Previously, he was an Associate Professor of Computer Science and Electrical and Computer Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University from 1992 to 2000. From 1989 to 1992, following completion of his Ph.D., he held positions as Research Scientist and Lecturer in the Department of Computer Science at Rice University. Johnson received his Ph.D. in Computer Science in 1990, M.S. in Computer Science in 1985, and B.A. with a double major in Computer Science and Mathematical Sciences in 1982, all from Rice University. He founded and leads the Monarch (MObile Networking ARCHitectures) research group, which originated at Carnegie Mellon in 1992 and continued at Rice.

Johnson's research focuses on network protocols, distributed systems, and operating systems, particularly protocols for wireless and mobile networking, including mobile ad hoc networking, sensor networking, and mesh networking in areas such as routing, security, and medium access control. He was a primary designer of the IETF Mobile IP protocol standards for both IPv4 and IPv6, and his group's Dynamic Source Routing (DSR) protocol for wireless ad hoc networks was published by the IETF as an experimental protocol (RFC 4728, 2007). Notable publications include the chapter 'DSR: The Dynamic Source Routing Protocol for Multi-Hop Wireless Ad Hoc Networks' in Ad Hoc Networking (2001), 'Mobility Support in IPv6' (RFC 3775, 2004), and editorship of Distributed Computing in Sensor Systems: 4th IEEE International Conference, DCOSS 2008 (2008). He has served as Chair of ACM SIGMOBILE (2005-2009), Treasurer (1997-2005), and member of the ACM SIG Governing Board Executive Committee (2008-2010). Johnson was General Chair for conferences including MobiCom 2003, IEEE MASS 2012, and COMSNETS 2011, and editor for journals such as Ad Hoc Networks, IEEE Pervasive Computing, and IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking. His awards include the NSF CAREER Award (1995), ACM SIGMOBILE Distinguished Service Award (2001), and MobiHoc 2011 Best Paper Award.
