David Kopplin is a Professor of Music at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, where he joined the faculty in 2001. He earned a B.A. from the University of Colorado in 1982, an M.M. in 1988, an M.M. from the University of Southern California in 1990, and a Ph.D. During his graduate studies at USC, he studied composition with Bob Linn, Morten Lauridsen, and Donald Crockett, as well as jazz composition with Vince Mendoza. As a leader in the Music Department, Kopplin has served as Chair and Interim Chair, guiding the program through expansions in facilities and faculty. He advises undergraduate students in Composition and Jazz Studies, contributing to the department's offerings in Bachelor of Arts programs with subplans in General Music, Music Education, and Music Industry Studies, as well as the Bachelor of Music in Composition.
Kopplin's scholarly work centers on music industry education and history. His publications include 'Best Practices in Music Industry Education' in the MEIEA Journal (2016) and 'Blue Note Records: A Singular Business Model' (2015). He has authored reviews of key texts such as Monika Herzig's 'David Baker: A Legacy in Music' (2011), Ty Cohen's 'The Music Business' (2006), Moses Avalon's 'Confessions of a Record Producer' (2006), and Mark Katz's 'Capturing Sound' (2006). From 2006 to 2015, he served on the editorial board of the Music and Entertainment Industry Educators Association. Kopplin directs the Cal Poly Pomona Jazz Band, leading performances and recording sessions at Capitol Studios. He has engaged in public scholarship, interviewing jazz guitarist Kenny Burrell at the Hollywood Bowl in 2002 and hosting 'Music from 1938' for the university's 75th anniversary. Additionally, he has participated in academic governance as a senate representative candidate and received commendations for service to the California State University system. His nomination of colleague Jessie Vallejo for Yamaha's 40 Under 40 Music Educator award highlights his commitment to excellence in music education.
