Great Professor!
David Levinson is Professor of Transport Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering's School of Civil Engineering at the University of Sydney, a position he has held since 2017, where he leads TransportLab and the Transport Engineering research group. He earned a PhD in Transportation Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley in 1998. From 1999 to 2016, Levinson was a professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Minnesota, serving as the Richard P. Braun/CTS Chair in Transportation from 2006 to 2016; he also served on the graduate faculty of Applied Economics and Urban and Regional Planning. Earlier, he worked as a transportation planner (1989-1994) for Montgomery County, Maryland, developing integrated transportation and land-use models, and was a visiting academic at Imperial College London (2006-2007).
Levinson's research spans transport engineering and planning, policy, economics, geography, and the intersection of transport and land use, with emphasis on transport-land use interactions, accessibility, transport network evolution, traffic programming, and the societal impacts of emerging technologies like electric and autonomous vehicles. He has authored ten books, including The Transportation Experience: Policy, Planning, and Deployment (2005), Planning for Place and Plexus (2008), Elements of Access (2017), The 30-Minute City: Designing for Access (2019), and A Political Economy of Access (2019), as well as over 100 peer-reviewed articles. Notable publications include "Accessibility and the journey to work" (1998) and "Value of travel time reliability: A review of current evidence" (2012). His contributions have been recognized with the CUTC/ARTBA New Faculty Award (2005) and the 1995 Tiebout Prize in Regional Science. Levinson is the founding editor of the Journal of Transport and Land Use and Findings Press, and previously directed the Networks, Economics, and Urban Systems (NEXUS) research group and the Accessibility Observatory at the University of Minnesota.
