David W. H. Riches, PhD, is a Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at National Jewish Health, where he serves as Head of the Division of Cell Biology. He is also a Professor in the Department of Immunology and Microbiology and in the Division of Pulmonary Sciences and Critical Care Medicine in the Department of Medicine at the University of Colorado Denver. Dr. Riches earned his PhD from the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom in 1979. His research centers on the intersection of lung immunity and fibrosis, with particular emphasis on the roles of macrophages and fibroblastic cells. His laboratory employs basic and translational approaches to investigate mechanisms underlying pulmonary fibrosis, macrophage functional programming, cytokine-induced signal transduction, and the regulation of fibroblast and myofibroblast apoptosis, utilizing mouse models as well as studies of lung tissues and cells from patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and related conditions.
Dr. Riches has held leadership roles including Director of the Thomas L. Petty Aspen Lung Conference since 2015 and permanent member of the Lung Injury Repair and Remodeling study section since 2014. He has served on the editorial board of the American Journal of Respiratory Cell and Molecular Biology since 2009 and previously chaired the Innate Immunity and Inflammation study section. In 2011, he received the Recognition Award for Scientific Accomplishments from the American Thoracic Society. He maintains professional memberships in the American Thoracic Society and the American Association of Immunologists. Key publications include studies on Fas expression in lung fibroblasts (2011), age and gender effects in bleomycin-induced lung injury (2011), a mouse model of rheumatoid arthritis-associated interstitial lung disease (2012), autophagy in cell fate determination (2014), and TNF-α in resolving pulmonary fibrosis (2014).
