About Davide

Davide Romelli is an Associate Professor of Economics in the Department of Economics at Trinity College Dublin, a position he has held since 2021, following his role as Assistant Professor from 2016 to 2021. He earned his PhD in Economics from ESSEC Business School and THEMA, University of Cergy-Pontoise in 2015, an MSc in Economic Analysis from the University of Cergy-Pontoise in 2011, an MSc in Banking and Finance from the Catholic University of Milan in 2009, and a BSc in Financial Markets and Institutions from the Catholic University of Milan in 2006. Earlier in his career, he served as a Teaching and Research Fellow at the University of Cergy-Pontoise from 2015 to 2016, an Associate Lecturer at ESSEC Business School from 2014 to 2015, and a Visiting Lecturer at Bocconi University in 2016. Romelli is a Research Affiliate of International Macro-TCD (IM-TCD) and SUERF – The European Money and Finance Forum, a Research Fellow at the BAFFI-CAREFIN Centre at Bocconi University, a Research Associate at the Centre for Economics, Policy and History, and a Chercheur affilié at OFCE-Sciences Po. His research focuses on central banking, central bank independence, central bank communication, monetary economics, international macro-finance, financial stability, banking and financial supervision, and political economy.

Romelli has an extensive publication record in leading journals, including 'The political economy of reforms in central bank design: evidence from a new dataset' (Economic Policy, 2022), 'Ups and downs of central bank independence from the Great Inflation to the Great Recession: Theory, institutions and empirics' (Financial History Review, 2015), 'Central Bankers as Supervisors: Do Crises Matter?' (European Journal of Political Economy, 2018), 'Central Bank Communication and Social Media: From Silence to Twitter' (Journal of Economic Surveys, 2024), and 'Competition and Innovation in the Financial Sector: Evidence from the Rise of FinTech Start-ups' (Journal of Financial Services Research, 2024). His work has garnered significant citations, with over 1,400 on Google Scholar. He has received prestigious awards and grants, such as the HARMONIA Grant from the Polish National Science Center (2019-2022), Provost’s PhD Project Awards from Trinity College Dublin (2018-2022), multiple Arts and Social Sciences Benefactions Funds, TRiSS Research Fellowship (2025-2026), and the SSE/WAIB Best Paper Award (2015). Romelli serves as Co-Editor of the European Journal of Political Economy and Associate Editor for the International Journal of Finance & Economics and International Economics and Economic Policy. He is a member of the Central Bank Digital Currency Academic Advisory Group jointly run by HM Treasury and the Bank of England, and the Monetary Policy Expert Panel of the European Parliament's ECON Committee. At Trinity College Dublin, he has directed the Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Economics and Big Data (2023-2025), IM-TCD (2019-2023, 2024), and Study Abroad for the School of Social Sciences and Philosophy (2019-2022), and served on the University Council (2021-2024).
