Dr. Dean Chircop is a Senior Lecturer at Griffith Film School, Griffith University, serving as Program Director for the Bachelor of Film and Screen Media Production and the Diploma of Technical Screen Production, and as Head of Directing. He holds a Doctor of Visual Arts from Griffith University. With more than twenty years of professional experience, Chircop has directed drama projects, music videos, and television commercials. His acclaimed short films include the state government-funded Bloody Footy (2005) and The Parlour (2002), which screened at renowned international festivals such as the Berlinale, Tribeca Film Festival, Los Angeles International Short Film Festival, Dendy Awards, and Chicago International Children’s Film Festival, where they won numerous awards.
Chircop's academic interests encompass screen production research, including the integration of branded content in Australian feature filmmaking, advancements in digital cinematography, and health and safety practices in production. Notable publications include 'The Intersection of Brand Partnerships in Australian Feature Filmmaking' in Refractory: a Journal of Entertainment Media (2019), 'Branded Entertainment and the Commodification of Narrative' (2012), and 'The Digital Cinematography Revolution & 35mm Sensors,' comparing cameras such as the Arriflex Alexa, Sony PMW-F3, and Canon 5D (2011). He has co-authored 'Crossing Boundaries: Promoting Cross-Disciplinary Projects in Four Creative Arts Faculties' (2011) and 'Student Experience of Intensive Delivery in Large Scale Studio-Based Learning' (2025). In teaching, he covers Directing Fundamentals, the Production Project capstone course, and Episodic Content. Chircop has delivered masterclasses in screenwriting for future Indonesian film leaders through the Australia Awards Short Courses program and is developing a hybrid financing and marketing model for his feature screenplay King of Speed as part of his doctoral research.
