Dr Deborah Hunn is a Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing in the School of Media, Creative Arts and Social Inquiry, Faculty of Humanities at Curtin University. She was awarded a PhD and BA (Hons) from the University of Western Australia in 2001. Throughout her career, Hunn has taught in the areas of English, Communication, and Cultural Studies. Her teaching excellence was acknowledged with an Honourable Mention for Excellence in Teaching from the Curtin Student Guild Award in 2006.
Hunn's research specializations and academic interests include Australian Literature, Queer Theory, Creative Writing, Gender Studies, and Creative Writing Theory and Pedagogy. As an academic and creative writer, she has authored the novel Devotion (Fremantle Press, 2006) and co-authored How to Be an Author: The Business of Being a Writer in Australia (Monash University Publishing, 2021) with Georgia Richter. She has published three edited books and numerous peer-reviewed articles, including "Basic Bullshit: Lesbian Detective Fiction and the Australian Lesbian and Gay Press" (Journal of the Association for the Study of Australian Literature, 1995), "‘A Tale of Two Slippers’: Uncanny Parody, Power and the Performance of Writing" (Axon, 2018), "Dorothy and Bob: An Australian Tennis Story" (Contesting Space 1: Women in Sport, 2018), "Introduction: Peripheral Visions" (Third Text, 2019), and "The Five Best Cat Films for Cat Lovers (that aren't the movie Cats)" (The Conversation, 2019). Other works appear in Westerly ("Endless Winter", 2013) and Polari Journal. Hunn has served as guest editor for the Continuum special issue "In Queer Minds" and is involved in Curtin's LGBTIQA+ Human Rights Network, contributing to podcasts and events on queer issues.
