Desiree Binuya serves as a Lecturer in Nursing within the School of Health at the University of New England. Holding registrations as a nurse in the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, and Australia, she possesses a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from St. Paul University Philippines in 2007 and a Master of Science in Nursing from the same institution in 2009, complemented by a Master of Nursing Practice from the University of New England awarded in December 2021. With more than 15 years of experience in both clinical practice and academia, Desiree has built a diverse career trajectory across multiple countries. She began her academic career as a Clinical and Academic Instructor at St. Paul University Philippines from April 2008 to May 2014. She then served as a Clinical Nurse Educator in the Emergency Department at King Khalid University Hospital in Saudi Arabia from May 2014 to September 2019. Upon relocating to Australia, she worked as a full-time Registered Nurse in the General Medical Ward at Armidale Hospital from February 2022 to May 2023, and she currently holds a part-time position as a Registered Nurse in the Emergency Department at Armidale Hospital since May 2023.
In her teaching portfolio, Desiree Binuya covers key areas including Cardiovascular Nursing, Emergency and Critical Care Nursing, Medical-Surgical Nursing, and Pediatric Nursing. She coordinates units such as HSNS263 Integrated Nursing Practice 1 and HSNS294 Professional Nursing Practice 3: Integrated Nursing Practice. Her research and supervision interests encompass Cardiovascular Nursing, Emergency and Critical Care Nursing, Clinical Nursing Education, student experience, and Pediatric Nursing, with preferred subject areas in emergency and critical care nursing and medical-surgical nursing. Having worked with a diverse range of learners in the Philippines, the Middle East, and Australia, she has assumed several clinical and academic roles, such as clinical nurse educator and academic team leader. A nurse by profession, Desiree has been in academia for over 15 years and is strongly invested in student success. She believes the best feeling for an educator is when a student returns to thank her for making a difference in their lives, making it a lifelong responsibility to ensure students meet their course goals. She maintains membership in the New South Wales Nurses and Midwives' Association (NSWNMA).
