Professor Dharmendra Sharma AM PhD is a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Canberra, where he serves as Chair of the Faculty Board in the Faculty of Science and Technology. He previously held the position of Chair of the University Academic Board from 2014 to 2019, Dean of the Faculty of Information Sciences and Engineering from 2007 to 2012, and Head of the School of Information Sciences and Engineering from 2004 to 2007. In 2012, he was appointed University Distinguished Professor. With over 40 years as an academic, Sharma earned his PhD in Artificial Intelligence from the Australian National University between 1988 and 1992, postgraduate qualifications in Computer Science from the University of New South Wales, and postgraduate and undergraduate qualifications in Mathematics and Science from the University of the South Pacific.
Sharma's research background is in artificial intelligence areas including planning, data analytics, knowledge discovery, predictive modeling, constraint processing, fuzzy reasoning, brain-computer interaction, hybrid systems, machine learning, deep learning, and pattern recognition, with applications to health, education, security, digital forensics, and sports. He has published over 320 research papers, supervised over 40 higher degree research students to completion, and received several competitive research awards and grants. Key publications include "Intrusion detection in smart cities using Restricted Boltzmann Machines" (Elsaeidy et al., 2019), "Handbook of deep learning applications" (Balas et al., 2019), "Senior health monitoring using Kinect" (Parajuli et al., 2012), "A proposed feature extraction method for EEG-based person identification" (Nguyen et al., 2012), and "PLLM-CS: Pre-trained Large Language Model (LLM) for cyber threat detection in satellite networks" (Hassanin et al., 2025). His contributions to higher education and computer science were recognized with the Order of Australia (AM) in 2019. Sharma is a Fellow of the Australian Computer Society (FACS), Fellow of the South Pacific Computer Society (FSPCS), Senior Member of IEEE (SMIEEE), Companion of the Institution of Engineers Australia (CompIEAust), and Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (GAICD). He has served on industry boards, government advisory and policy committees, and delivered invited talks including "Digital Disruption - the new normal: Leveraging Technology for productivity, growth and sustainability" in 2020.
