Michael Di Rienzo serves as Adjunct Professor of Practice at the Newcastle Business School, part of the College of Human and Social Futures at the University of Newcastle, Australia. He is also a valued member of the University Council. Holding a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Newcastle, Di Rienzo is a dedicated alumnus committed to giving back to his alma mater. He has expressed his motivation for joining the Council as follows: "As a University of Newcastle alumni and a proud novocastrian I wish to support the university with my leadership experience, organisational knowledge and contribute to our community."
Di Rienzo's distinguished career spans finance, supply chain management, and logistics in the manufacturing sector before transitioning to the healthcare industry in 1999. He culminated his public health service as the Chief Executive of the Hunter New England Local Health District. In this pivotal role, he was responsible for delivering comprehensive healthcare services across a vast region, from small rural community health centres to major tertiary referral hospitals. The district, under his stewardship, employed 18,000 staff members and operated with an annual expenditure budget exceeding $3 billion, providing essential services to approximately one million residents spread over 130,000 square kilometres.
Upon retiring in 2023, Di Rienzo founded CXDX Connected Diagnostics, an innovative local enterprise dedicated to advancing medical technologies and services in the domain of brain health and wellbeing. Complementing this entrepreneurial venture, he offers expert consulting in health management and leadership to a diverse array of organizations. Through these endeavors and his contributions to the University of Newcastle, Di Rienzo continues to leverage his extensive executive experience for the betterment of health services and education.
