About Diana

Associate Professor Diana Learoyd is an academic endocrinologist in the Northern Clinical School at the University of Sydney, Faculty of Medicine and Health. She obtained her Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from the University of Sydney in 1984 and her PhD in Medicine in 2000, focusing on molecular and clinical studies of medullary and papillary thyroid cancer. She gained Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) in 1991 while working as a thyroid fellow at King’s College Hospital, London. Supported by a National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) scholarship, she completed her PhD on thyroid cancer genetics at the Kolling Institute, Royal North Shore Hospital (RNSH).

Trained at RNSH in Sydney, Learoyd has served as a staff specialist in endocrinology there since 1992 and was appointed clinical academic consultant at the University of Sydney and RNSH in 1998, continuing until 2020. Hospital roles included Director of Clinical Training and co-Director of Physician Training. She established the RNSH Endocrine Tumour Database with a NSW Cancer Institute grant, contributed to Australia’s first thyroid cancer targeted therapy clinical trials, and initiated Sydney-wide thyroid cancer case discussion evenings. Her clinical practice covers thyroid cancer, general endocrinology, menopause, and osteoporosis. University appointments featured Postgraduate Coordinator for the Department of Medicine, MD student research project coordinator, and Endocrine Syllabus Designer for the Masters of Internal Medicine. Research interests encompass thyroid cancer, neuroendocrine tumours, and genetic endocrine diseases. Key publications include "Adjuvant External Beam Radiotherapy Reduces Local Recurrence in Locally Advanced Papillary Thyroid Cancer" (2025), "Suppurative thyroiditis: Systematic review and clinical guidance" (2021), "Standard and Emerging Therapies for Metastatic Differentiated Thyroid Cancer" (2010), and "Increasing incidence of thyroid cancer is due to overdiagnosis" (2008). A long-term member of the Endocrine Society of Australia, she served as President (2009-2010), on Federal Council (2018-2022), and received Life Membership in 2025.
