Dianne Gardam is a Senior Medical Scientist in the Microbiology Department at Fiona Stanley Hospital, part of PathWest Laboratory Medicine WA in Perth, Australia. She obtained her Bachelor's degree in Microbiology and Biochemistry from The University of Western Australia and a Graduate Diploma in Medical Science from Curtin University. Her research focuses on clinical microbiology and medical mycology, including fungal infections, diagnosis of pathogens, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, fungal taxonomy, and emerging fungal pathogens such as Candida auris, Aspergillus fumigatus, Lomentospora prolificans, and Scedosporium species.
Gardam has made substantial contributions to the field through numerous peer-reviewed publications spanning over two decades. Key works include 'Cystic Fibrosis Clinical Isolates of Aspergillus fumigatus Induce Similar Muco-inflammatory Responses in Primary Airway Epithelial Cells' (2021), 'Multilocus Sequence Typing Reveals Extensive Genetic Diversity of the Emerging Fungal Pathogen Scedosporium aurantiacum' (2021), 'Investigation of a Lomentospora prolificans Case Cluster with Whole Genome Sequencing' (2020), 'Tracing the Evolutionary History and Global Expansion of Candida auris Using Population Genomic Analyses' (2020), 'Impact of Erg11 Amino Acid Substitutions Identified in Candida auris Clade III Isolates on Triazole Drug Susceptibility' (2021), 'Rare Modification in the Ergosterol Biosynthesis Pathway Leads to Amphotericin B Resistance in Candida auris Clinical Isolates' (2021), 'Retrospective Review of Fungal Keratitis at Two Tertiary Hospitals in Perth, Western Australia Between 2006 and 2022' (2025), 'Epidemiology and Antifungal Susceptibility Patterns of Candidemia from a Tertiary Centre in Western Australia' (2019), and 'Cutaneous Mucormycosis and Motor Vehicle Accidents: Findings from an Australian Case Series' (2014). Her publications have accumulated 766 citations on ResearchGate. In 2022, she was appointed convenor of the Australian Society for Microbiology National Medical Mycology Special Interest Group. Additionally, in 2023-24, she was a chief investigator on a National Health and Medical Research Council Ideas Grant for fungal susceptibility testing using the FLOW method. Gardam frequently collaborates with researchers from Curtin University, the Telethon Kids Institute, and other institutions on projects related to fungal pathogens in cystic fibrosis and invasive infections, enhancing diagnostic practices in Australasian clinical mycology laboratories.
