Dominik Roeser is an Associate Professor in Forest Operations and Associate Dean for Research Forests and Community Outreach in the Faculty of Forestry & Environmental Stewardship at the University of British Columbia. He joined UBC in 2018 and established a forest operations research program emphasizing supply chain design, forest technology implementation, steep slope harvesting, and biomass operations. Prior to UBC, Roeser served as Senior Director at FPInnovations, where he managed a multidisciplinary team dedicated to enhancing the competitiveness of the forest sector and developing solutions to reduce wildfire impacts in Western Canada. With more than 21 years of experience in forest research and innovation, he has partnered with industry stakeholders in Europe and Canada to foster solutions supporting the emerging bioeconomy. His expertise spans forest operations, fibre supply, wildfire operations, forest biomass, and forest technology.
In the Forest Action Lab, Roeser's research frames innovation and development to promote sustainable forest management across diverse operational environments. Employing methods such as productivity studies, practical field trials, modeling, and evaluations of sustainability impacts, the lab addresses the needs of forestry stakeholders in British Columbia, Canada, and internationally. Core research areas include the sustainable utilization of forest biomass in the bioeconomy, harvesting in challenging terrain, application of innovative tools in forest planning and management, productivity enhancement in forest operations, carbon management throughout the forest supply chain, and the effects of reforestation on community sustainability. As Associate Dean, he strengthens connections between the faculty and research forests like Alex Fraser and Malcolm Knapp, provides strategic direction for projects on watershed management, assisted migration, carbon management, and silviculture, and builds partnerships with other universities, government agencies, and Indigenous communities. Roeser teaches courses in forestry and supports students through classroom instruction and field schools. He received the Recognition Award from the Canadian Forest Service in 2017.
