Ed Clausen is a University Professor in the Ralph E. Martin Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, where he holds the Charles W. Oxford Professorship in Chemical Engineering. Previously, he served as holder of the Ray C. Adam Endowed Chair. Clausen earned his B.S.Ch.E., M.S.Ch.E., and Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of Missouri-Rolla, completing his doctorate in 1978. He joined the University of Arkansas faculty in 1981 and has held key administrative positions, including associate department head since 2008, director of the College of Engineering honors program since 2009, and interim department head in 2014, during which he occupied the Ralph E. Martin Leadership Chair. A registered professional engineer in Arkansas, he is a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, American Chemical Society, American Society for Engineering Education, and the University of Arkansas Teaching Academy.
Clausen's research spans bioprocess engineering, encompassing biofuels production, fermentation, bioenergy, and extraction processes, with a recent shift toward engineering education and enhancing STEM learning for K-12 students through hands-on experiences and summer programs. He has authored over 600 technical publications and presentations, holds 18 patents, and his work has garnered more than 6,116 citations. Key publications include "Extraction of Nutraceuticals from Milk Thistle" and studies on silymarin extraction from milk thistle seeds using hot water and shikimic acid extraction from sweetgum coupled to dilute acid pretreatment. He teaches courses such as Chemical Engineering I, Introduction to Chemical Engineering II, Professional Practice Seminar, and Chemical Engineering Reactor Design. For his teaching and mentoring excellence, Clausen received the 2013 Dr. John and Mrs. Lois Imhoff Award for Outstanding Teaching and Student Mentorship, the 2011 Outstanding Teacher award from the Midwest Section of the American Society for Engineering Education, and the Honors College Distinguished Leadership Award. He contributes to the Certificate of Proficiency in Brewing Science advisory board, SIIRE research team, and various faculty recognition events.
