Eduardo Alemán is a Professor of Political Science at the University of Houston’s Department of Political Science in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. He joined the faculty in 2005 as an Assistant Professor, was promoted to Associate Professor in 2010, and to Professor thereafter. Alemán holds a Ph.D. in Political Science and an M.A. in Latin American Studies from the University of California, Los Angeles. His research centers on the comparative analysis of political institutions, with a particular emphasis on Latin American politics, including executive-legislative relations, parliamentary procedures, government coalitions, and agenda-setting processes in legislatures.
Alemán has made significant contributions to the field through his publications. He authored Latin American Politics (Sage/CQ Press, 2020) and co-edited Legislative Institutions and Lawmaking in Latin America (Oxford University Press, 2016) with George Tsebelis. His articles have appeared in prestigious journals such as World Politics (“Presidential Conditional Agenda Setting in Latin America,” 2005, with George Tsebelis), Comparative Political Studies, Legislative Studies Quarterly, Electoral Studies, and Journal of Democracy (“Chile’s Failed Constitution: Democracy Wins,” 2023, with Patricio Navia). With over 3,100 citations on Google Scholar, his work has influenced studies on legislative politics and political institutions. Alemán teaches graduate seminars in comparative political analysis, comparative political institutions, and comparative parliaments, as well as undergraduate courses in comparative politics, introduction to Latin American politics, political institutions, and Latin American legislative politics. In recognition of his teaching excellence, he received the 2023 Teaching Excellence Award from the University of Houston Office of the Provost and the 2023 Ross M. Lence Teaching Excellence Award from the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences.
