About Eduardo

Eduardo Góes Neves is a full professor of archaeology at the Museu de Arqueologia e Etnologia of the Universidade de São Paulo. He earned a BA in History from the Universidade de São Paulo in 1986, followed by a master’s degree and a PhD in Anthropology from Indiana University. Since 1989 he has taught at the undergraduate and graduate levels at the Museu de Arqueologia e Etnologia, where he has served as director from 2022 to 2026. Neves has directed the Central Amazon Project since 1995, conducting extensive archaeological research on long-term human occupation and environmental transformation in the Amazon region. He has held visiting appointments at institutions including Harvard University and is a CNPq research fellow. In 2019 he received the Research Prize of the Shanghai Archaeological Forum. Neves is the author of more than 130 publications, including the book Sob os Tempos do Equinócio: Oito Mil Anos de História na Amazônia Central, published in 2022, as well as Arqueologia da Amazônia. His work has contributed significantly to understandings of Amazonian prehistory, indigenous land management, and the biocultural heritage of the region. He has participated in international lectures, editorial roles, and collaborative research initiatives focused on archaeology and anthropology.
