Elizabeth Hodge, PhD, is a Professor in the Educational Leadership and Foundations Department within the College of Education at East Carolina University. She currently holds multiple leadership positions, including Assistant Dean for Innovations and Strategic Initiatives in the College of Education, where she leads strategic planning efforts; Director for Engaged Research for the Office of Community Engagement and Research, overseeing initiatives such as the Engagement and Outreach Scholar Academy; and Lead Administrator for the North Carolina New Teacher Support Program, a university-based induction program aimed at increasing teacher effectiveness and reducing attrition among beginning teachers. With more than 26 years in academic administrative roles and faculty positions, primarily at East Carolina University since 2000, Hodge brings extensive experience in managing complex educational initiatives involving systems, processes, budgeting, and policy. Her academic background includes studies at Ithaca College in Hospitality and Business, a degree in Business Information Technologies from East Carolina University, and a PhD in Higher Education Administration, Policy, and Finance from the University of Florida, with her dissertation titled "A study of the development of community college distance education policies" completed in 2000.
Hodge teaches a broad range of subjects at graduate and undergraduate levels, including finance, leadership, management, marketing, entrepreneurship, human-centered design, instructional design, and information technology. Her research focuses on online teaching and learning, faculty development in distance education, professional development for instructors, mobile learning, virtual worlds in education, immersive education, e-learning, multi-user virtual environments, and professional learning communities. Notable publications include "How Instructors Learn to Teach Online: Considering the Past to Plan for the Future" (eLearn Magazine, 2020), "Engaging Honors Students During Covid-19: Pandemic Pitfalls, Pivots, and Possibilities" (Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council, 2021), "Understanding the Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Honors College Students: A Qualitative Content Analysis" (2021), and "Learning Spaces in a Second Life" (2010). She has served as principal investigator on significant grants, such as the GEER Phase 2 funding from the North Carolina Pandemic Recovery Office (2022-2024), ESSER II funds, and the Blue Economy project (2023-2025), contributing to teacher retention and innovative learning environments. In recognition of her contributions, she received the ECU Centennial Award of Excellence (Ambition) in 2019. Additionally, Hodge is involved in projects like NSF I-Corps Training, Video Grand Rounds, edTPA, and the 360° Video Student Immersion Program, and holds a North Carolina Teaching License.
