Her academic background includes BDS (Hons), MDS, PhD—focused on the microbiology and molecular biology of dental caries—and FRACDS designation as a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons. Professor Martin's research specializations encompass the oral microbiome, development of the oral resistome, fluoride release and recharge in restorative materials, dentine sensitivity relief, dental caries risk factors particularly in children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities, and mechanical properties of dental composites and giomers. Key publications include "Development of the oral resistome during the first decade of life" (Nature Communications, 2023), "Risk Factors for Dental Caries Experience in Children and Adolescents with Intellectual Disability" (2022), "Enhancing Fluoride Mediated Dentine Sensitivity Relief through Functionalised Self-Assembled Monolayers" (2016), "Long-term fluoride exchanges at restoration surfaces and effects on adjacent enamel demineralisation" (2013, Australian Dental Journal), "Fluoride Release, Recharge and Mechanical Property Stability of Giomers" (Operative Dentistry, 2011), and "Influence of Immediate Dentin Sealing on the Shear Bond Strength of Pressed Ceramic Luted to Dentin with Self-Etch Resin Cement" (2012). She has produced 386 research works accumulating 4492 citations. In 2019, she received the Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in the Queen's Birthday Honours for distinguished service to dental education as an academic and researcher, and to professional organisations.
