Dr. Ellen Castle is a Senior Lecturer (Teaching and Research) in the Physiotherapy team within the School of Allied Health, Faculty of Health Sciences at Curtin University in Perth, Australia. She also serves as an Honorary Senior Lecturer and Researcher in Physiotherapy in the Department of Health Sciences at Brunel University London. Her academic background includes a BSc in Physiotherapy from the University of Notre Dame in Perth, Western Australia; a Masters in Clinical Research from King's College London; and a PhD in Transplantation Research from King's College London. Previously, she worked in the Department of Therapies at King's College Hospital in London, collaborating with the King's Renal Rehabilitation and Exercise Team led by Dr. Sharlene Greenwood. At Curtin University, she joined as Senior Lecturer from January 2024.
Dr. Castle's research specializations center on physical activity, exercise, and wellbeing interventions for individuals with long-term conditions, particularly chronic kidney disease, kidney transplant recipients, and type 2 diabetes. Her interests encompass both digital and face-to-face interventions, with a focus on participant experiences using qualitative methods, alongside systematic reviews and meta-analyses. Key publications include Greenwood et al. (2023) 'Kidney BEAM: the development and internal pilot trial of a digital physical activity and emotional well-being intervention for people with chronic kidney disease' in The Lancet Digital Health; Young et al. (2024) in Scientific Reports on Kidney BEAM trial outcomes; Greenwood et al. (2024) in Kidney International Reports on clinical and cost-effectiveness; and Castle et al. (2024) on the RESIT intervention for reducing sitting time in type 2 diabetes patients. Additional works cover usability testing for weight management in kidney transplant recipients and national surveys on rehabilitation services for chronic kidney disease in the UK. Her contributions advance digital health applications like the Kidney BEAM platform in multi-centre randomized controlled trials.
