Emil Gernert, PhD, served as Associate Professor of Biology in the Department of Natural Sciences at Baruch College of the City University of New York. Over his distinguished career spanning more than 43 years, he established himself as one of the highest rated teachers at Baruch College. Dr. Gernert is the author of many articles on the physiology of mold Aspergillus, reflecting his research specialization in fungal physiology. His scholarly work has contributed to the understanding of microbial processes within the field of biology.
In addition to his research, Dr. Gernert made enduring contributions to teaching, mentorship, and program development. He launched the student advisement program of the Natural Sciences department and was instrumental in developing its upper-level courses, strengthening the Biology curriculum. As longtime advisor to the Biomedical Society student club since 1976, he fostered a supportive community for students interested in biomedical careers. Dr. Gernert advised students in honors theses and independent study projects, chaired the Medical School Recommendation Committee, and participated as faculty in the Enrollment Management Leadership Academy. He collaborated with colleagues such as Dr. Ramzi Khuri and Dr. John Wahlert to mentor students who received Jonas E. Salk Scholarships. His excellence was honored with the Presidential Excellence Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1999 and for Distinguished Service in 2003. In 2014, he was recognized for 40 years of service at the Employee Recognition Reception. Dr. Gernert's legacy endures through the Clivner-Field Plaza paver inscription 'EMIL GERNERT JR. NAT. SCI. DEVOTED COLLEAGUE & EDUCATOR-43 YRS' and the annual Dr. Emil Gernert Jr. Biomed Award for students demonstrating leadership in the natural sciences program.
