About Emily

Emily Crawford is a Professor at the University of Sydney Law School, where she currently serves as Deputy Head of School and Dean. She holds a Bachelor of Arts with Honours, Bachelor of Laws, and Doctor of Philosophy from the University of New South Wales, along with a Graduate Certificate in Educational Studies (Higher Education) from the University of Sydney. Crawford joined the Sydney Law School in 2011 and has progressed through various academic roles, including lecturer and associate professor, to her present position. As Director of the Sydney Centre for International Law, she leads initiatives in this area. Additionally, she co-edits the Journal of International Humanitarian Studies and serves as chief investigator on projects such as Nuclear Warfare and International Law. Her teaching covers international law topics, and she supervises research degrees in related fields.

Crawford's research focuses on international law, international humanitarian law, and international criminal law, with particular emphasis on civilian participation in armed conflict, non-binding norms, and emerging issues like nuclear command and control. These works have garnered international recognition for their analytical depth and innovative approaches to complex legal challenges in warfare and humanitarian protection. Crawford has received the Max Planck-Cambridge Prize for International Law in 2023, awarded for her outstanding mid-career contributions to international law scholarship, and the 2024 Council of Australian Law Deans (CALD) Legal Research Awards Non-Traditional Research Output Award for the exhibition 'At the Vanishing Point: Encounters with the Souvenirs, Merchandise and Memorabilia of International Law,' developed with Jessie Hohmann and Daniel Joyce.
