Dr Emlyn Dodd is an Honorary Postdoctoral Fellow in the School of Humanities at Macquarie University, where he earned his PhD in Archaeology and Ancient History in 2018 with a thesis titled Roman and Late Antique Wine Production in the Eastern Mediterranean, and his Bachelor of Ancient History with First Class Honours in 2013. He currently holds the position of Senior Lecturer in Classical Studies at the Institute of Classical Studies, University of London, following roles as Lecturer there from 2023 to 2024 and Assistant Director for Archaeology at the British School at Rome from 2021 to 2023. Previously, he served as Program Manager at the University of Technology Sydney from 2018 to 2021. Dodd is a Graeco-Roman archaeologist whose research centers on ancient wine and olive oil production, agriculture, technology, and trade. He co-directs the Falerii Novi Project, conducting major excavations at the Roman urban centre of Falerii Novi in central Italy, and leads a survey project in the Cyclades focused on the identification and distribution of agricultural technology and knowledge from the Classical to Late Antique eras. His fieldwork includes collaborations at sites such as Delos, the Athenian Agora and Acropolis in Greece, Pompeii and Oplontis in Italy, Carsulae, Sicily, and the Antiochia ad Cragum Archaeological Research Project in Turkey.
Dodd was named Macquarie University’s Early-Career Researcher of the Year in 2023 and has secured over $950,000 in competitive funding from the British Academy, Leverhulme Foundation, Australian Academy of the Humanities, British School at Athens, and Australasian Society for Classical Studies. He is an Elected Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London (FSA), Royal Historical Society (FRHistS), and Higher Education Academy (FHEA), and holds positions as Research Fellow at the British School at Rome and Research Affiliate at the Australian Archaeological Institute at Athens. Key publications include the article 'The archaeology of wine production in Roman and pre-Roman Italy' (American Journal of Archaeology, 2022), 'The spectacle of production: a Roman imperial winery at the Villa of the Quintilii, Rome' (Antiquity, 2023), the monograph Roman and Late Antique Wine Production in the Eastern Mediterranean (Archaeopress, 2020), and edited volumes Methods in Ancient Wine Archaeology (Bloomsbury, 2024) and Vine-growing and Winemaking in the Roman World (Leuven University Press, 2025). He serves on research boards for UK Research & Innovation, University of London Academic Board, and has delivered invited public lectures such as 'The science and technology of Roman wine and olive oil production' in 2026.
