Emre Ilhan (he/him) is a physiotherapist, researcher, and educator serving as Senior Lecturer in the School of Health Sciences and Nursing, Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences, Macquarie University. He earned a Doctor of Philosophy in 2021, Doctor of Physiotherapy in 2016, and Bachelor of Science in Psychology (Honours) in 2010, all from Macquarie University. In clinical practice, he works as a physiotherapist at Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District since 2024 and as Honorary Research Officer at the Australian Grace Centre for Newborn Intensive Care since 2022. Ilhan is a member of the Spinal Pain Research Centre and teaches in the Doctor of Physiotherapy, Doctor of Medicine, and Master of Research programs, delivering expertise in pain management, evidence-based healthcare, health equity, and research training.
Ilhan's research utilizes critical theory and intersectionality to address health inequities produced by intersecting systems of oppression. His interests encompass neonatal, infant, and paediatric pain; pain in LGBTQIASB+, older adults in residential aged care, people with disabilities, culturally and racially marginalised groups, and other marginalised populations; queerying physiotherapy, research, healthcare, and education; evidence-based healthcare and shared decision-making; and paediatric (cerebral palsy) and adult neurological rehabilitation, employing quantitative and qualitative methodologies. Key publications include 'An intervention model for children with mild developmental delay using multi-stakeholder co-design study and Australia-wide survey' (2026), 'Pride and pain – a lifespan-informed, identity-affirming approach to paediatric pain in 2SLGBTQIA+ youth: panel discussion at the international symposium for pediatric pain' (2026), 'An online pain management program for people with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome or hypermobility spectrum disorder: a three-staged development process' (2025, Disability and Rehabilitation), 'Assessments, diagnostic criteria and outcome measures for growing pains and persistent pain in the presence of restless leg syndrome in children: a scoping review' (2025, BMJ Open), and 'What is the definition of acute episodic and chronic pain in critically ill neonates and infants?' (2022, BMJ Open). As team leader, he received the Excellence in Education - Rising Star award in 2023. Ilhan holds leadership positions including Co-chair of the MQ Ally Network Steering Committee and MQ d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing Lived Experience Network, and member of the Physiotherapy Evidence Database Education and Training Sub-Committee and Australian Physiotherapy Association LGBTQIA+ Advisory Panel. He delivered the invited talk 'Embedding access in ways of working: LGBTQIA+ inclusive physiotherapy' in 2024.
