Eric T. Volckmann, MD, FACS, FASMBS, serves as Associate Professor (Clinical) in the Division of General Surgery at the University of Utah School of Medicine. He is the Director of the University of Utah Health Care Bariatric Surgery Program at University Hospital in Salt Lake City, where he founded the bariatric surgery program and expanded it into a comprehensive weight management service. Dr. Volckmann specializes in minimally invasive upper gastrointestinal procedures and bariatric surgery, including diagnostic and interventional flexible upper endoscopy, laparoscopic surgery for gastroesophageal reflux disease, hiatal hernias, achalasia, and abdominal wall hernias, as well as procedures such as laparoscopic gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, and adjustable gastric banding. He holds certifications from the American Board of Surgery in General Surgery and the National Board of Medical Examiners.
Dr. Volckmann received his medical degree from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. He completed residency training at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, followed by a two-year research fellowship at the same institution focused on the development of new minimally invasive surgical techniques. He then served as Clinical Assistant Professor at The Ohio State University Medical Center, gaining extensive experience in minimally invasive gastrointestinal and bariatric procedures through one of the oldest such training programs in the country. His research interests encompass surgical outcomes and quality improvement, as well as the impacts of bariatric surgery on inflammation, nutrition, and gastroesophageal reflux disease. Notable publications include 'Pyloroplasty Offers Relief of Postfundoplication Gastroparesis' (2017, co-authored with Abbie Brickley, Linda Taylor, Robert Glasgow, and John Fang), 'Transepithelial Transport of PAMAM Dendrimers Across Isolated Human Intestinal Tissue' (2015), 'Prospective Collection of PROMIS Physical Function Scores in Bariatric Surgery Patients' (2020, co-authored with Ellen Morrow, Anna Ibele, and Benjamin Brooke), and 'Comparison of Prospective Risk Estimates for Postoperative Complications' (2013). Dr. Volckmann has presented grand rounds on multidisciplinary management of obesity (2019, with Julianna Simonetti) and bariatric surgery topics, contributing to educational efforts in the field.
