Eric Wearne is an Assistant Professor of Economics in the Department of Economics, Finance and Quantitative Analysis at Kennesaw State University's Coles College of Business. He also holds the position of Associate Professor in the Education Economics Center and serves as Director of the National Hybrid Schools Project. Wearne earned his Ph.D. in Educational Studies from Emory University, M.A. in English Education from the University of Georgia, and B.A. in English from Florida State University. His career trajectory includes prior roles as Provost at Holy Spirit College, Associate Professor of Education Foundations at Georgia Gwinnett College, Deputy Director of the Governor's Office of Student Achievement in Atlanta—where he oversaw the annual State Report Card and Scoreboard, managed research projects, and conducted audits of standardized testing—and high school English and Debate teacher at Duluth High School in Gwinnett County, Georgia. He has engaged with charter, private, traditional public schools, and homeschoolers as a teacher, advisor, and grant reviewer.
Wearne's research specializations encompass education policy, school choice, hybrid homeschooling, microschools, and the history of American education. He authored the book Defining Hybrid Homeschools in America: Little Platoons, published by Lexington Books in 2020. His publications appear in outlets such as the Journal of School Choice, Peabody Journal of Education, Home School Researcher, Catholic Social Science Review, City Journal, and Law & Liberty. Notable works include American Populist Support for Choice in K-12 Education with Benjamin Scafidi in 2021, and co-authored National Hybrid Schools Survey reports in 2022, 2023, and 2025 with John Thompson. As Director of the National Hybrid Schools Project, he maintains a national clearinghouse for research, data, practices, and networking on hybrid homeschooling; produces datasets and analyses; and convenes founders, educators, policymakers, and researchers through forums like the Western Hybrid and Microschools Forum. Wearne hosts the Community Crafted Education Podcast exploring hybrid and microschools' impacts and teaches courses including ECON 2300: Business Statistics at Kennesaw State University.
