Dr. Erica Mason serves as Lecturer in Graphic Design and Academic Chair of Design Thinking and Service Innovation in Murdoch University's School of Media and Communication. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Design, an Honours in Design, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Design from Edith Cowan University, completed between 2016 and 2025. As a prominent educator and researcher, Mason specializes in design thinking, service design, and creative strategy, applying human-centred methodologies to tackle complex social and organisational challenges. Her work investigates design's potential as a critical tool to bolster societal systems, economic policies, natural environments, and their holistic interconnections, ensuring innovations improve the world without generating future complications. Mason bridges academic research and industry practice, contributing to curriculum development that integrates forward-thinking design methods into Murdoch University's programs, equipping emerging designers with skills for global leadership in innovation.
Mason's scholarly output includes presentations at the 19th International Conference on Design Principles & Practices in Singapore in 2025, where she presented 'Co-design is Key to Understanding People in Holistic, Human-Centred Ways' and 'Evolving Design Practices: Integrating Human-Centred Methodologies in Perth's Small Business Marketing.' She leads key programs such as the Graduate Diploma in Design Thinking and Service Innovation and the Graduate Certificate in Design Thinking, fostering practical application of design principles. Beyond academia, she is a committee member of the Australian Graphic Design Association (AGDA) and has delivered keynote addresses, including for the Design and Technology Teachers Association of Western Australia (DATTAWA). Through collaborative projects and thought leadership, Mason empowers students and professionals to harness design for sustainable impact across sectors, transforming services and enhancing user experiences.
