Eric D. Nordmoe is Professor of Mathematics and Chair of the Mathematics Department at Kalamazoo College, a position he has held since his appointment as Assistant Professor in 1996, progressing to Associate Professor in 2004 and full Professor in 2016. His academic journey began with a BA in Economics with honors from the University of Chicago in 1981, followed by an MBA in Marketing and Econometrics with honors from the same university in 1987, and culminated in a PhD in Statistics from Northwestern University in 1993, where his dissertation focused on entropy-based prediction of categorical response variables in scanner panel data. Before joining Kalamazoo College, Nordmoe served as a Teaching Fellow in the Department of Economics and Statistics at the National University of Singapore from 1993 to 1996, teaching courses in applied statistics and supervising honors theses. He has enriched his career with visiting appointments, including Visiting Professor at Korea University in Seoul in 2010, Visiting Scientist at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore in 2006 for collaborative research in life and environmental sciences, and Visiting Scholar in Biostatistics at the University of Michigan in 2002. Earlier, he gained industry experience as Assistant Manager of Marketing Research and Market Research Analyst at Kraft, Inc., from 1985 to 1988, and as Research Supervisor at BBDO Chicago from 1981 to 1985.
Nordmoe's research specializations encompass statistics education, analysis of categorical data, and longitudinal data analysis. He has authored several refereed publications, notably "Service-Learning in Introductory Statistics at Kalamazoo College" in the Journal of Statistics Education (2007), "Kiss high blood pressure goodbye: The relationship between dark chocolate and hypertension" in Teaching Statistics (2008), "Nest Site Fidelity of Leatherback Turtles at Playa Grande, Costa Rica" in Animal Behaviour (2004), and "Drawing Statistical Inferences from Logit Models for Panel Data" in Applied Stochastic Models in Business and Industry (2000). Nordmoe has presented extensively at conferences such as the Joint Statistical Meetings on topics including hypothesis testing, service-learning, and curricular breadth quantification. At Kalamazoo College, he teaches a range of courses including Calculus II, Applied Statistics I and II, Biostatistics, Mathematical Statistics, and Introduction to Data Science. He received the Outstanding Advisor Award during Founders Day in 2021. Nordmoe has also chaired the college's accreditation self-study and contributed to quantitative reasoning programs and summer algebra camps for underrepresented students.
