Ernest E. Moore, MD, is a Distinguished Professor in Surgery-GI, Trauma, and Endocrine Surgery at the University of Colorado School of Medicine on the Anschutz Medical Campus in Denver. He received his MD from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 1972 and a BS from Allegheny College in 1968, followed by internship and residency in surgery at the University of Vermont, completing in 1976. Moore has dedicated his career to trauma and acute care surgery, serving as Chief of Trauma Services at Denver Health Medical Center for 36 years and Chief of Surgery for 28 years. He held the first Bruce M. Rockwell Distinguished Chair in Trauma Surgery and currently serves as Vice Chairman for Research in the Department of Surgery and Director of Surgical Research. Under his leadership, the Rocky Mountain Regional Trauma Center at Denver Health gained international acclaim and was renamed the Ernest E. Moore Shock Trauma Center in 2018 in his honor.
Moore's primary research interests center on trauma-induced coagulopathy, resuscitation strategies for achieving thrombo-inflammatory hemostasis, and mechanisms of post-injury organ dysfunction. His trauma research laboratory at Denver Health has maintained continuous NIH funding for 35 years. He has authored over 1,700 peer-reviewed publications, including recent works on emergency medical clinician volume and mortality in trauma patients (2026), multiomic analyses of thromboinflammation in trauma (2026), and guidelines for vascular injuries. Moore co-edited seminal textbooks such as Trauma (9th edition), Surgical Secrets (7th edition), and Trauma Induced Coagulopathy (2nd edition). He edited the Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery from 2011 to 2021 and has presided over nine major surgical societies, including the Society of University Surgeons and American Association for the Surgery of Trauma. His profound impact is evidenced by numerous honors, including the Medallion for Scientific Achievement from the American Surgical Association (2019), Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society of University Surgeons (2016), Distinguished Investigator Awards from the Shock Society (2017) and American College of Critical Care Medicine (2014), and honorary fellowships from the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Ireland, and Thailand.
