Eugenia Costa-Giomi is a Professor of Music Education, Associate Director, and Director of Graduate Studies in the School of Music at The Ohio State University, College of Arts and Sciences. She is a Distinguished Professor of the Academy of Teaching and an associate researcher at the Crane Center for Early Childhood Research and Policy. Her education includes a Ph.D. in Music Education from The Ohio State University in 1991, graduate studies in piano and music education at Indiana University from 1986 to 1988, and a Profesora Superior de Música diploma from the National Conservatory of Music in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1984.
She joined The Ohio State University faculty in 2015, following positions as Director of Graduate Studies and Professor of Music and Human Learning at the University of Texas at Austin, where she was also affiliated with Developmental Psychology, and as Associate Professor and Head of Music Education at McGill University in Canada. Earlier, she taught music in public schools and educational institutions in Argentina, Canada, and Mexico. Costa-Giomi's research specializations encompass music education, music perception and cognition in childhood, non-musical benefits of music instruction, music learning and development, and the cognitive, social, and health benefits of music participation. Key publications include "The Effects of Three Years of Piano Instruction on Children's Cognitive Development" (Journal of Research in Music Education, 1999), "Effects of Three Years of Piano Instruction on Children's Academic Achievement, School Performance and Self-Esteem" (Psychology of Music, 2004), "Infants’ Preferential Attention to Sung and Spoken Stimuli" (Journal of Research in Music Education, 2014), and "Infant Vocal Imitation of Music" (Journal of Research in Music Education, 2020). She has received major grants and fellowships from the GRAMMY Foundation, National Piano Foundation, Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, Royal Bank of Canada, and Engagement Scholarship Consortium. Costa-Giomi chaired the Society for Research in Music Education and the International Conference on Music Perception and Cognition, served on doctoral committees worldwide, and contributed to editorial boards of Journal of Research in Music Education, Psychology of Music, and others. She was honored with the 2012 Senior Researcher Award.
