Evie Wood, also known as Evangeline Wood, is a distinguished alumna of Southern Cross University, where she recently completed a Bachelor of Laws with Honours. Recognized for her exceptional community contributions, she received the Community Impact Award from the Southern Cross University Alumni Network. As a volunteer firefighter with the Rural Fire Service and a part-time employee at a law firm in Murwillumbah, Evie is committed to pursuing legal roles that align with her values of social impact and justice delivery.
In 2021, Evie co-founded and serves as president of Coolamon Community, an initiative dedicated to supporting First Nations mothers through culturally safe health services. The organization has delivered over 400 woven cribs containing safe sleeping spaces, essential items, cultural celebrations, and breastfeeding support, primarily serving areas from Tweed to Coffs Harbour and toward Casino. This work addresses intergenerational trauma stemming from the high rates of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander child removals, which are over ten times more likely than for non-Indigenous children. Evie emphasizes the superior outcomes provided by Aboriginal Health Services. Her journey to law school, undertaken while raising a young baby years after an initial attempt, represented a personal reawakening, underscoring the critical role of legal knowledge in achieving justice, particularly for marginalized communities. Collaborating with fellow SCU graduate Pam Brook and her mother Jennifer, Evie launched Coolamon Community following a pivotal conversation as new mothers. Her multifaceted career exemplifies resilience, compassion, and dedication to First Nations well-being.
