Professor Syed Faisal Ahmed holds the Samson Gemmell Chair of Child Health in the School of Medicine, Dentistry & Nursing at the University of Glasgow. A qualified physician with MBChB, MD, and MA degrees, and FRCPCH, he serves as an honorary consultant in paediatric endocrinology at the Royal Hospital for Children, Glasgow. Appointed to his chair in 2012, Ahmed leads the Developmental Endocrinology Research Group and the Office for Rare Conditions, focusing on translational research into disorders of endocrine function presenting in early life, particularly differences/disorders of sex development (DSD), congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), bone health in chronic conditions, and rare endocrine conditions. His career emphasizes improving clinical care through global partnerships, standardized datasets, and registries for rare diseases.
Ahmed has spearheaded major international projects, including the EU-funded EuroDSD (2008-2011), I-DSD Registry (MRC, 2011-2017), DSDnet (COST Action, 2013-2018), Endo-ERN, EuRRECa (2018-2022, extended to 2028), EuRR-Bone, and the industry-supported GloBE-Reg launched in 2022. These initiatives facilitate data sharing, outcome assessment, and guideline development for conditions like DSD and CAH. His extensive publication record exceeds 280 items, with highly cited works such as the 'Consensus statement on management of intersex disorders' (2006, over 2500 citations), 'Global disorders of sex development update since 2006' (2016), 'Diagnosis and management of pseudohypoparathyroidism' consensus (2018), and UK guidance on DSD evaluation (2011, revised 2021). Ahmed received the ESPE Research Award in 2021 for contributions to paediatric endocrinology and was appointed Editor-in-Chief of Endocrine Connections in 2023. His efforts have significantly influenced clinical practice, registry development, and multidisciplinary care for rare endocrine disorders worldwide.
