Dr. Faith Weeks is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Towson University, where she joined the faculty in 2015. She holds a B.A. in Psychology from Elmira College, an M.S. in Environmental Education from Southern Connecticut State University, and a Ph.D. in Entomology from Purdue University. Weeks' research centers on the integration of insects and related arthropods into life sciences education for PreK-16 students. Her work examines how live insects serve as effective models for teaching core biological concepts, including predator-prey interactions, trophic structures, and decomposer roles in ecosystems. Additionally, she investigates the impact of informal learning environments—such as nature centers, zoos, and summer camps—on shaping public perceptions and understanding of insects and arthropods. Weeks also explores factors influencing perceptions of arthropods, such as color variations, and their application in science education to foster positive attitudes toward these organisms.
Weeks has made notable contributions through her publications and outreach initiatives. Key works include 'Interest in Insects: The Role of Entomology in Environmental Education' (2018, co-authored with Christian Y. Oseto), which assessed university outreach programs using insects across classroom, workshop, and online formats, demonstrating significant gains in student interest and teacher self-efficacy in environmental and entomological topics. Earlier publications are 'A longitudinal study of the effectiveness of a K-12 engagement program on graduate student learning outcomes' (2015, International Journal of Higher Education, with R. Gong and J. Harbor) and 'Assessing the impact of a K-12 engagement program on graduate learning outcomes for communicating with diverse audiences, pedagogy, and community engagement' (2014, International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, with J. Harbor). In 2018-2019, she received the Business & Community Outreach award from Towson University's College of Science and Mathematics in recognition of her exemplary efforts. Weeks currently serves as Faculty Leader for Evaluation in the Hill-Lopes Scholars Program, which supports women pursuing STEM fields, drawing from her commitment to inclusive science education and mentorship. Her innovative pedagogical approaches, leveraging insects in the classroom, enhance student engagement and contribute to broader impacts in biology education and STEM diversity.
