About Falk

Falk Herwig is a Professor of Astrophysics at the University of Victoria in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, where he also serves as Director of the Astronomy Research Centre. He leads the Computational Stellar Astrophysics group, which uses high-performance computing to perform 3D hydrodynamics simulations exploring stellar convection, internal gravity waves, and the nuclear origins of the elements. His research focuses on stellar evolution, hydrodynamics, and nuclear astrophysics of single and binary stars, including nucleosynthesis simulations, the origin of the elements in stars and stellar explosions, and the chemical evolution of galaxies. Herwig obtained his PhD from the University of Kiel and the Astrophysikalisches Institut Potsdam in Germany. He has held postdoctoral positions in Potsdam and Victoria prior to his faculty appointment at the University of Victoria. Herwig has authored or co-authored over 200 peer-reviewed articles, with research contributions including studies on the evolution of helium white dwarfs, convective overshooting in asymptotic giant branch stars, and the formation of hydrogen-deficient post-AGB stars. His work is associated with collaborations such as the NuGrid collaboration and the Joint Institute for Nuclear Astrophysics. He maintains an active research program supported by allocations on Canadian high-performance computing resources.
